I’ve been pretty busy with my new job which is going great so far. Here is some stuff I’ve been up to lately:

I went to my first ever conference. It was pretty fun!
One of my best friends, and Pie’s brother both came to visit for weekends
I’ve helped Pie build a whole lot of lego
I finally read The Hunger Games. Oh my god. I’m banning myself from buying the other two until I’ve at least read a couple of other books
I bought a bunch of camping gear in preparation for my second ever conference this weekend
I went to the same steakhouse twice in one week. I want to go again. I just want to eat steak every day now

Corn gone viral? You’re looking at an ear of a corn variety called “Glass Gem”, grown by Greg Schoen of Seeds Trust. This is real corn! How does it grow this way?

First you have to understand a few things about corn. Each corn kernel is actually a sort of unique plant. A corn plant’s male parts (the “tassels”) sit at the top of the stalk, and drop pollen downward. Unfertilized ears (the female parts) catch the pollen with the sticky ends of their corn silks. Each corn silk (I hate when that gets in my teeth) grabs a pollen grain, shuttles it allllllll the way down inside the ear, eventually creating one kernel for each pollen-silk-ovum combination. It’s one of the more interesting and inefficient breeding schemes I know of.

If you’ve taken genetics, you know that the parents’ genes will combine by chance, leading to certain ratios of inheritance in the offspring. This is the basis of Mendelian genetics (great Khan Academy video here).

With corn, we’ve simply carefully bred all the interestingness out of them. Native Americans were used to multi-colored corn, because corn plants held many varieties of color genes that could combine at random. Now all we are left with are one-color clones.

This “Glass Gem” corn is the other extreme of the spectrum, a combination of corn color hybrid genes and random pollination. It’s almost too pretty to eat!

Today has been better. My work started to make sense, and I got most of it done, and the week is 3/5 over already, and I realised that I’m not working a proper full week for the next 3 weeks in a row (hell yes).

I’m just about to relax with a cup of chocolate flake tea, so here is a cute gif of a dog and a bunny.

Working on a project where I was really unsure what I was doing. Then when I was finally starting to figure it out and get shit done, I was sent a document explaining it in a lot more detail which made a load of the work I’d done either useless or just plain wrong.

Got an hour left to go. Can’t wait to get home, have a glass of wine and eat all the foods.

It’s been an awesome weekend. Pie’s brother and his girlfriend came to visit, we went here to Cosmeston yesterday morning, into town for shopping yesterday afternoon, out for a steak dinner last night, and sat out in the sun at the bay earlier today.

This evening Pie and I are off to see Alkaline Trio. The gig is at my old student union which is going to be so weird as I haven’t been there in nearly 5 years (holy crap, has it been that long?!).

Also, I love how they all look totally dorky here, besides Chris Hemsworth who just looks exactly the same besides having less hair, and I like to think that this reflects how the avengers actually would have been as teenagers.

Just like everyone else on the planet, I saw The Avengers this weekend. And just like everyone else, I loved it. Non-stop action and great dialog. Bravo, Whedon.

God it was good. In fact, so good, I saw it twice in two days. And I’d go again if someone asked.

I’d love to know where this photo was taken, because at what kind of event do most of the guys dress super casually, as if they’re going to go do yard work, or buy groceries, except for RDJ who seems to be in some kind of (admittedly awesome) 1970s pimp fancy dress?

Stayed 10 minutes late at work out of choice. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I would never have done that at my old job.
Saw The Avengers, which was actually fantastic, I’d totally recommend it to everyone. We got annoyed as the movie started late and there was this horrifically annoying girl in front of us in the queue but as soon as the movie started I forgot all about it.
Ate awesome boneless wings with ranch at Hooters. Immediately regretted my decision to order curly fries and not 10 more baskets of wings.
Had the worst drive home as a combination of dark, rain and steam meant my visibility was basically zero. Thankfully managed to get home in one piece though.

Looking forward to a weekend of organising my cupboards and generally cleaning and tidying up before one of my best friends comes to stay next week - very excited!

So it only makes sense that artists who work at Sesame Workshop turned them into huge murals of Elmo, Cookie Monster, and more. One of the artists talks about the process — and shows some more of his work — over on our blog.

I need to get a haircut anyway and I have so much of it that it would really be a shame not to put it to such great use.

Kind of over-excited about it and I’m so tempted to just chop it off right now, but I think it’s advisable to wait until I can get to a hairdresser. I’m still chopping off the ponytail myself, but I don’t really want to have to wander around showing off my handywork for very long!
